The Mother of all Comebacks
2 Kings 4:1-7 ESV Now the wife of one of the sons of the prophets cried to Elisha, "Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the Lord, but the creditor has come to take my two children to be his slaves." And Elisha said to her, "What shall I do for you? Tell me; what have you in the house?" And she said, "Your servant has nothing in the house except a jar of oil." Then he said, "Go outside, borrow vessels from all your neighbors, empty vessels and not too few. Then go in and shut the door behind yourself and your sons and pour into all these vessels. And when one is full, set it aside." So she went from him and shut the door behind herself and her sons. And as she poured they brought the vessels to her. When the vessels were full, she said to her son, "Bring me another vessel." And he said to her, "There is not another." Then the oil stopped flowing. She came and told the man of God, and he said, "Go, sell the oil and pay your debts, and you and your sons can live on the rest."
She has a dead husband. This mama is single momming. She finds out her husband had some crazy debts. She’s at the point where she is going to lose her sons to the creditor to pay for these huge debts.
She’s facing losing them to not just to death but maybe even worse than death; a life of poor living, poor treatment and hard intense physical labor.
Can you image? Like, I will throat punch you if you come at my kids! Heck no sucker! But she felt powerless in this situation.
She tells Elisha that she has NOTHING; nothing in her house except a jar of oil. She had to have either sold or lost everything else already!?!?! Otherwise she would have had something else in the house right?? The only reason she had the oil left is because it probably would not have sold for enough to make any change in her situation. So it held NO value to those around her...
Even she, did not hold enough value for her to be the one sold into slavery instead of her two young sons. She didn't have enough worth in and of herself to trade places with the sons.
Talk about mom life! We often see ourselves as useless, valueless, unseen, powerless and definitely undervalued. She was at rock bottom.
But now let’s look at her turn around. Let’s see what we as moms are capable of:
She goes to the man of God at the time, Elisha. She as a mom had to humble herself after facing that legit she could do nothing at all to save her children. The helplessness she must have felt?!?!? Heart wrenching!
Luckily, for us moms today, we have the Holy Spirit to ask for wisdom from. Her going to Elisha is the equivalent of us praying, asking the holy spirit for help and diving into the word of God for some extra wisdom! Elisha asks her, “what have you in the house?”. He is pointing her to what she had right then in that moment. Hes essentially saying that she already had what she needed!
He’s pointing to what YOU already have right now! Where you are now! Who you are today. YOU! You have value! You are and you have what you need within you already!
So she tells him that she has oil. “Nothing but a jar of oil”. Kinda like how we moms explain that we are “Just a mom”. "
Ever had this convo? "What do you do?"
"Oh, I'm just a stay at home mom."
🙋♀️ I have
Elisha gives her instructions. He gives her a goal. He gives her a plan for her comeback. He gives her hope! She obeys. She does her graced #momlife we all do. She sets about her work like a mother would. She involves the kids training them along the way how to obey God, how to make a living and how to work hard.
(Bonus side note: If she hadn’t had a community and build relationships with those around her she would not have had enough vessels to fill to be able to sell enough to cover her debt. Asking for help in this mom life is not a #fail. Having a support system is Godly. We moms tend to feel like we have to do it all on our own but God’s plan often involves others in your live to help you along the way.)
She rocked it! We moms rock! She did her mom life even in the middle of tragedy. I mean C'mon mamas! This is what we do! We rock it! We overcome dark moments in our lives all while momming like rock stars. (It may not feel like it in the moment but thank you mama’s for pressing through the hard times and still rocking your momming skills)
So she goes in and works her mom butt off until all the work was done. I think we can all relate to that! Like not only did she start the laundry but she legit folded it and put it way...even the socks.
She obeys God’s plan then goes back to the man of God, Elisha, and asked, “now what?”.
He tells her to, "sell it". He is showing her that her hard work held value. Her hard work had enough value that she was able to sell it and not just get out of debt but retire off the rest of the money! WHAT?!?!?! Not just her but her and her sons were able to live off the rest of the money. #momhustle
At rock bottom she felt like she had nothing! Her life was out of her control. Her life was tragic. Her situation sucked hard core. She was empty, valueless, broken and broke. But at rock bottom she sought God! She took her lowest moment and turned to God. She did her mom thing and together created an epic comeback.
She learned her value as a mom. She learned that with God and her God given graced mom-ness, she could create more value. Not only did she create it she also taught how to create value to her kids. I mean c’mon moms! We all have a calling on our lives to instill knowing your worth to the next generation (your kids and beyond). We do that by first knowing our own worth.
You hold worth whether you are at rock bottom or in the middle of your momming comeback or finally at the selling/profiting point in your mom life.
If you are needing a comeback....you have what you need already within you. Ask God to show you what it is.
If your in the middle of a comeback... do your mom thing and know you are graced for the hard work ahead.
If you are at the point that you've received your comeback...give glory to God and share your wisdom! Hook another mama up!
YOU have a comeback in you waiting to come to reality.
You mama, have value no matter your situation!
Your momming holds so much value!
Keep rocking this mom life!
