Forget me not
Gen 40: 9-14, 23 & Gen 41: 9
40: 9 So the chief cup-bearer told Joseph his dream first. “In my dream,” he said, “I saw a grapevine in front of me. The vine had three branches that began to bud and blossom, and soon it produced clusters of ripe grapes. I was holding Pharaoh’s wine cup in my hand, so I took a cluster of grapes and squeezed the juice into the cup. Then I placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.” “This is what the dream means,” Joseph said. “The three branches represent three days. Within three days Pharaoh will lift you up and restore you to your position as his chief cup-bearer. And please remember me and do me a favor when things go well for you. Mention me to Pharaoh, so he might let me out of this place.
40:23 Pharaoh’s chief cup-bearer, however, forgot all about Joseph, never giving him another thought.
41: 9-13 Finally, the king’s chief cup-bearer spoke up. “Today I have been reminded of my failure,” he told Pharaoh. “Some time ago, you were angry with the chief baker and me, and you imprisoned us in the palace of the captain of the guard. One night the chief baker and I each had a dream, and each dream had its own meaning. There was a young Hebrew man with us in the prison who was a slave of the captain of the guard. We told him our dreams, and he told us what each of our dreams meant. And everything happened just as he had predicted. I was restored to my position as cup-bearer, and the chief baker was executed and impaled on a pole.”
Earlier in the book of Genesis we see how Joseph was put in prison for something he didn’t do. He was lied about by a bored housewife cougar and then thrown into the dungeon. Years later after he finally got out of prison the story goes on to tell about how Joseph interpreted the king's dream. Joseph was so wise that the king took him straight from prison and placed him as the most important guy in all the land, besides the king himself. The king made Joseph rich and powerful. Joseph was then able to save his entire family when they came looking for food due to the 7 years of famine in the area. What a turn around! From prison on trumped up charges to ruler and controller of all the food and land in the region.
I alway think about these bible stories and wonder what if? What if the cup holder guy had not forgotten? What if he had spoken up earlier and told the king about Joseph, a wise man who could interpret dreams? Would Joseph have been set free from prison earlier? Would that have started the upward path for Joseph sooner?
What have we slowed down in our own lives just because we’ve forgotten? We let it slip from memory. We later remember and think, “Oh man! Talk about mom fail!” Like the day I forgot that our school had early out and I left my son at school an extra hour to sit alone in the school office wondering where I was. And to top it off it was Valentines day! (What do you do for your kids on valentines day? Me? Well I forget to pick them up from school!) That was the epitome of #momfail!
The cup bearer guy forgot. It says in the scriptures that he remembered his failure later. He felt like a failure because he had forgotten! But what happens when we remember? What happens when we do what God has called us to do the first time he tells us? Acceleration happens!! What the cup guy put off affected not just him but also Joseph. This cup bearer guy could have accelerated Joseph’s whole life story if he had remembered and obeyed. What we do today will accelerate our life path. When God brings something up to our hearts to do, it is meant to bring joy, peace and acceleration to the good plan God has for our lives. I understand that it’s easier said than done. It takes commitment and usually for me it takes organization (which honestly is not my strong suit). It takes me actually setting an alarm in my phone or an event in my calendar. But when I make it happen…the JOY that comes is exhilarating! When I forget it brings a sense of failure but when I actually remember and obey it brings acceleration in to my life! It brings acceleration not just for me but those around me! Gods plan and path for my life affects people around me.
This cup holding man (talk about random jobs!) eventually remembered again. Better late than never! When he finally remembered, he felt the shame but he moved on! He pick himself back up from that failure and did what had been asked of him. And because he obeyed, God made sure that he nor Joseph starved during a 7 year famine. What have you forgotten? What have I forgotten? Let’s ask ourselves if there is something on our heart that God has asked us to do. Start today! Start now (well after you finish reading this!) Let’s get on the accelerated path! It can be something big or small! For my as I type this I remember that God placed on my heart to study “Boldness” a while ago. I never did it. Guess what I'm doing today?!?!?!
